Accessible Seating Dimensions

When benches are installed in pedestrian areas, at least one per group, and in any case, one for every five benches or fraction thereof, must meet the following design and location criteria, allowing access from the accessible pedestrian route.

  • Ensure seating has an ergonomic design with a seat depth between 40 and 45 cm and a height between 40 and 45 cm for comfort.
  • Incorporate armrests and backrests with a minimum height of 45 cm and a maximum angle of 105° for better support.
  • Provide a 60 cm wide, unobstructed space in front of each seating unit to allow for ease of access.
  • Design seating to include a 1.50 m diameter clearance on one side to accommodate wheelchair users and others with mobility aids.
  • For ischial support, design seats with a depth between 20 and 40 cm, support height between 70 and 80 cm, and a backrest height between 80 and 100 cm to ensure comfort for extended sitting.
  • Ensure the seating area includes clear space for individuals with strollers, mobility aids, and wheelchair users, promoting accessibility for everyone.
