Design Accessible Rest Areas
Rest areas in public spaces play a critical role in providing spaces for people to relax and recover, contributing to the overall well-being of users. To ensure these areas are accessible and functional for all, specific design features must be integrated to accommodate individuals of varying abilities.

- Provide seating at regular intervals along access routes and near changes in level, such as ramps or steps.
- Locate seating in sheltered spots where users can enjoy a good view, particularly in outdoor and recreational areas.
- Ensure seating does not obstruct movement by placing it 600mm behind the line of travel and maintaining clear access routes.
- Design seating with a firm, stable surface flush with the surrounding area for safety and accessibility.
- In rest areas, ensure a minimum vertical clearance of 2.20 meters to accommodate people with varying heights and mobility needs.
- Ensure smooth, uninterrupted, slip-resistant flooring is used throughout rest areas for safety and comfort.
