Guiding Path Surface for Pedestrian Navigation
The guidance path surface is designed to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating spaces where traditional reference points, such as kerbs or building walls, are absent. Unlike warning surfaces, this tactile paving does not indicate an approaching hazard but rather provides continuous directional guidance. It can be followed either by walking directly on the surface or by detecting it with a long cane.
To ensure effective navigation, the guidance path should maintain a consistent orientation in a straight line, with at least 800mm of free space on each side to allow unobstructed pedestrian movement. At junctions where routes diverge, the first slab of the secondary path should be placed transversely to indicate an alternative direction. In cases where the guidance path is interrupted by a street crossing, the layout must always lead pedestrians to the shortest and safest crossing point, ensuring continuity with the next section of tactile paving.

- Install in areas where there are no physical references such as kerbs or building walls.
- Design so that people can walk on the surface or detect with a cane.
- Ensure that the orientation of the ground guidance continues in a straight line.
- Ensure a free width of 800mm on each side of the footpath.
- To indicate the secondary route at forks, place the first slab transversely.
- When the route is interrupted at a street junction, ensure that the guidance leads to the shortest path and the paving is oriented to the direction that joins it to the next section of tactile flooring.
