Commercial Activity Elements in Pedestrian Areas

Commercial features such as kiosks, terraces, and canopies help enliven pedestrian zones, providing services and amenities. However, their design and placement must prioritize accessibility to ensure safe navigation for all users, especially those with disabilities.

  • Position commercial elements so they are reachable from the accessible pedestrian route, allowing straightforward entry and use by all.
  • Arrange terraces, bar areas, or similar installations to avoid creating hazards, especially for individuals with visual impairments.
  • Awnings, umbrellas, and similar overhanging elements must have a minimum clearance of 2.20 m to prevent collisions.
  • For kiosks or stands with public-facing counters, provide a minimum width of 80 cm, at a maximum height of 85 cm, with at least 70 × 80 × 50 cm of unobstructed space underneath (height × width × depth).
  • Rapid transaction shelves or windows should be installed at a height of 0.90 to 1.20 m, ensuring ease of reach for various users.
