Design and Placement of Waste Bins and Containers

Waste bins and containers should be strategically placed in public spaces to ensure accessibility, cleanliness, and safety. Proper design and positioning allow individuals of all abilities to dispose of waste without obstructing pedestrian flow.

  • Ensure waste bin openings are between 70 cm and 1.20 meters in height to remain accessible from pedestrian routes.
  • Install low-effort handles or pedals to operate bins, ensuring ease of use for all individuals.
  • Opening Mechanism must have low-effort handles or pedals (under 25 N force, <20 cm high), easily operated with fist or elbow.
  • Buried containers must align with surrounding pavement levels to maintain surface continuity and avoid trip hazards.
